Rockhouse, an exceptional boutique hotel on the volcanic coastline of JamaicaTuesday 10 April 2018
Perched on the cliffs of Pristine Cove on the western tip of Jamaica, Rockhouse and its African-influenced villas seem to be one with the landscape. An architectural fusion that emphasises the overarching theme of this resort: harmony, in the broadest sense of the word. This spirit is embodied by its spa, where body and mind become one.
A combination of luxury and nature
Overlooking the Caribbean Sea, at the far opposite of Port Antonio, the 28 villas of Rockhouse seem hewn from the volcanic cliffs themselves. Designed by the Australian architect Jean-Henri Morin, these bungalows are inspired by African villages known for their communion with the environment. Their thatch roofs and octagonal forms look striking against the turquoise waves. And all of this, in the midst of luxurious tropical vegetation. A casually chic retreat where guests are truly in harmony with nature.
Rockhouse also boasts numerous views of the rugged shoreline, allowing it to merge even more closely with the landscape. Each room offers large sliding glass doors, inviting the sun to wash over the Caribbean-style furniture. And let's not forget the private terrace with its stone staircase, letting you dive into the sea without even having to leave your room. The height of refinement, its two restaurants - Rockhouse, which shares the hotel's name and revisits Caribbean cuisine, and the Pushcart, which serves Jamaican specialities - are suspended above the waves for breathtaking views during your meal. Especially at sunset, when the sea is set ablaze before your eyes. Finally, it's impossible not to mention the swimming pool of this hotel, elegantly tucked into the cliff side.
At Rockhouse, the watchword is well-being. In addition to yoga classes, a luxurious spa helps visitors to reconnect their body and mind during a calming interlude. The two-time winner of the World Travel Award for Best Spa in Jamaica, the most prestigious distinction in the tourism industry, Rockhouse takes a holistic approach, considering all aspects of the human being: body and mind, as well as emotions.
On the agenda? Aromatherapy, exfoliation, therapeutic wraps, plantar reflexology, rejuvenating facial massage, Swedish massage. And all with lotions made with natural ingredients from the island such as ginger, honey, cacao and sea minerals. The spa's signature treatment, the tropical massage combines three different techniques as well as the use of medicinal herbs, oils, bamboo and hot stones. Not to mention the range of Thai treatments, based on traditional Nuat Thai techniques, which work to free the flow of energy running through the body. In the end, the chosen treatment matters little, as they all provide a moment of pure luxuriation.
